1271 people died with COVID-19 symptoms in four months: CGS

As many as 1,271 people died with symptoms of the novel coronavirus in the past four months, said a study commissioned by Center for Genocide Studies (CGS).

At least 174 people died in the last week while 206 a week before, according to the Bangladesh Peace Observatory (BPO), a project of the Dhaka University-based CGS.

BPO prepared the study analysing reports of 25 media outlets in the country and revealed it on Thursday.

The study showed that the highest number of 386 people died in Chattogram division while 303 in Dhaka, 133 in Barishal, 132 in Khulna, 123 in Rajshahi, 78 in Sylhet, 68 in Rangpur and 48 in Mymensingh.

In the last six weeks, respectively 114, 93, 50, 67, 48, 73 and 154 people died with coronavirus symptoms.

BPO researchers said they are continuously revising the tally as per updated information.

Study report stated that not all of those who died with coronavirus symptoms are infected with the novel virus. Quoting a media report the study noted that, 85 per cent of them did not have COVID-19 infection.

It also said 87 people were arrested on charges of spreading rumours over the coronavirus until 20 June.
